AFSCME LOCAL 1550 HONORS ALL OUR VETERANS

Veterans Day is observed annually on November 11. It’s a holiday honoring men and women who have served in the U.S. armed forces, on the anniversary of the end of World War I.

Veterans Day is a time to pay tribute to the service and sacrifices of all U.S. military veterans. But acknowledging what these amazing men and women have done for our country is not enough. We must do more.

To truly honor our veterans, Veterans Day must be a time to strengthen our commitment to providing our veterans with “good jobs” with better wages and benefits that can support a family and provide a pathway to the middle class.

Vaccine Mandates in Texas

Gov. Greg Abbott has issued an executive order banning any entity in Texas from requiring COVID-19 vaccinations for employees or customers — including private businesses. Abbott also called on the Legislature to pass a law with the same effect. The Legislature is in its third special legislative session, which ends Oct. 19.

AFSCME 1550 supports lowering drug prices to help millions of Americans

About half of American adults take at least one prescription medicine, and as many as 25% of adults take four or more prescription drugs. Many, despite having health insurance, are in the same boat: They can hardly afford to pay for their medications and are forced to make impossible choices.

Message From Our Executive Director

Unions strengthen democracy by giving workers a voice in policy debates. Americans have a constitutionally protected right to associate and ask for change. Americans join together to change speed limits, school policy, laws governing gun ownership and drug possession and use, and more. And when Americans have wanted to make the economy fairer and more responsive to the needs of workers, they have traditionally joined together in unions to do so.

For me, having a voice has always been about recognizing what that voice has achieved for the American worker. That voice built the middle class, spoke out against racial and social injustice and has been responsible for real job security, for health and safety advances and for a solid living wage, and that voice amplified by America’s great unions is what we continue to fight for and protect.
