Providing A Better Life For Our Veterans

The harsh reality is that too many workers are  facing serious obstacles to finding these good jobs. Unlike their parents and grandparents who served in the military and returned home to a time of shared prosperity, today’s veterans are returning to a country that is grappling with a wealth gap not seen since the “Roaring Twenties,” where good manufacturing jobs have been shipped overseas, wages are stagnant, and the middle class is shrinking at an alarming rate. More troubling, irresponsible companies and governmental agencies talk proudly about their programs for veterans, but fail to provide wages or opportunities necessary to build a better life.

Despite their dedication, experience and skills, too many of our country’s veterans are paying the price as companies and governmental agencies continue to cut wages, hours and benefits, and punish those who speak out and try to better their lives. This should not be the reality for any worker, but it especially should not be the reality for our veterans.

As a nation, we have a moral obligation to provide the best quality care to those who put their lives on the line to defend us. Just as planes and tanks and guns are a cost of war, so is taking care of the men and women who we sent off to fight the wars. It includes caring for the spouses and children who have to rebuild their lives after the loss of a loved one. It includes caring for the hundreds of thousands of veterans with multiple amputations or loss of eyesight, post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury. It includes veterans who are having difficulty keeping jobs in order to pay their bills, and it includes the terrible tragedy of veterans committing suicide.

We must pledge to care for our service members — as they have cared for this nation — and work to ensure that they have the resources they need and deserve. They were there when their country called on them to serve, and we need to be there for them as a nation who recognizes their contribution.

The simple truth is this: We can and must do better, and AFSCME Local 1550 is committed to standing up for our veterans and their families.

AFSCME Local 1550 has always been a proud supporter and advocate for veterans and their families. We continue to work in support of veterans’ benefits, opportunities, health care and more.

AFSCME Local 1550 will continue to fight for the rights of our brothers and sisters who bravely served our country and their families.

To our veterans past and present, thank you for your service and patriotism to our country. We are forever grateful for the sacrifices you and your families have made to keep us safe. And we will stand by you, no matter what.

Thank you and GOD bless our veterans for their service to our nation!!!
